Column 258 at Grow, Hackney, November 23rd

November 15, 2017

Column 258 at Grow, Hackney, 98C Main Yard, Wallis Road, Hackney Wick, E9 5LN

Thursday November 23rd. 7-11pm.

Experimental alt groove band Column 258 will be appearing at Grow, Hackney on Thursday November 23rd as a part of their winter tour to celebrate the launch of their second album, The Fritz Tapes, a collection of 5 improvised songs recorded live by Fritz Catlin in his garden studio in Sussex. Fritz was a founder member of British post-punk skewed-funk legends 23 Skidoo. Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills, and later augmented by Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop, 23 Skidoo had interests in martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets and William S. Burroughs.

Column 258 combine spoken word with elements of a mythical Americana, Canterbury-scene English whimsy, alt groove, punk-jazz and improv-electronica: everything is improvised, with individual song structures based on a loose set of ideas, and realised through each musician’s intuition, empathy and careful attention to the music’s continuously unfolding dynamics.

Column 258 at Grow, Hackney is a free event. Everyone is welcome.

The Fritz Tapes is available as a download, price £3.99, or as a CD, price £6.00, including shipping to any address in the UK.

ABOUT GROW, HACKNEY

An Experiment in Ethical and Sustainable Business.

Grow is an independent bar, kitchen and creative space carved out of an old sausage factory by the River Lea in Hackney Wick. It is run as an experiment in ethical and sustainable business and works in partnership with local artists, musicians, DJ's and community groups. Events are free, from live jazz and blues, open deck reggae, open mic and art festivals. This year, we have Slow Fire London in the kitchen and BBQ.

Grow exists for music, art, food, conversation, community and belonging.  Everyone is welcome.

As an experiment without any investment, it is not always easy to be financially sustainable but we make as many ethical choices as we can (for example: when working with partners, the food and drink we offer and the use of the space for the community) that are motivated by collaborative good, not profit. The more established and solvent we become, the higher percentage of our supplies can be locally sourced, free range, organic, fair trade and sourced from organisations that neither avoid their taxes nor invest in ethically dubious business. We also pay London Living Wage.

Grow, 98C Main Yard, Wallis Road, Hackney Wick, E9 5LN. Just two minutes walk from Hackney Wick Overground and 15 mins walk from Stratford.

Some Grow Hackney Community Partners

Hackney WickED - an annual arts event and open studios when we work with local artists and musicians to share work.
Wick Radio - a group of artists who run a local radio station who sometimes broadcast our events.
Hackney Wick Bouldering Project - a climbing centre also found in Main Yard and we offer members 10% off food and drink.
Hackney Herbal - we dedicate a planter to this social enterprise who hold volunteer sessions and harvest the herbs to make tea.
